Set up contact-specific commissions

3 min

In this guide, we're going to talk about how to give specific contacts in your program a higher (or lower) referral commission (or points) amount than the default amount received by the rest of the program members. We refer to this as contact tag overrides.

A common scenario for brands is that they want to reward most of the ambassadors in their program with X% (e.g. 10%), but they need to reward one or more program members need Y% (e.g. 18%) instead. Rather than creating a new program, or using Roster's dynamic referral tiers feature, you can simply create one or more contact tag override rules to get the job done.

Step-by-step instructions

Create a new contact tag (if needed)

The referral amount override uses contact tags to identify which program members should receive the override amount. Before you can create an override rule, you need to ensure the desired contact tag exists.

Navigate to Brand Settings in the left-hand navigation panel.

Click Contact Tags.

Click Create Tag, name the tag (e.g., VIP), and choose a color for easy identification.

Save the new tag.

Navigate to the program settings

From the main Roster menu, click on Programs.

Select the program where you want to apply a commission override.

Navigate to the Settings, and then click on Referrals tab.

Set up the referral amount override

Scroll to the Referral Commissions or Referral Points section.

Click Edit next to the default commission or points setting.

Click to expand the Contact Tag Override accordion

Click the Add an Override button.

Note: Overrides are only available for Percentage of Sale and Fixed Amount rewards.

Select the Contact Tag to apply the override to.

Set the Amount of the override.

Save the referral reward settings.

Manage multiple overrides (optional)

To create additional contact tag override for the same program, click Add an Override again.

Assign a unique tag for each override to distinguish groups of ambassadors.

You can add multiple tags to a single override. Ambassadors only need one matching tag to qualify.

Tag contacts in the ambassador program

There are multiple ways to tag contacts in Roster, but here is one of the most common ways to do it in bulk:

Go to the Contacts section.

Filter contacts by program (e.g., Ambassadors).

Select the ambassadors to whom the override should apply.

Click Actions, then select Add Tags.

Choose the newly created tag (e.g., VIP) and click Add Tag.

Verify the tagging by viewing the Tags section in an ambassador's profile.

Test the commission override

View the contact profile for an ambassador who is tagged based on the override rule you set up.

Complete the checkout process using the ambassador’s referral link or discount code.

In the Reports section of Roster, verify the order details:

Check the referral attribution details for accuracy.

Confirm that the correct commission percentage is applied based on the override.
