Connect Facebook & Instagram
9 min
connecting your facebook and instagram accounts to your brand account in roster is an essential step to leverage the platform’s social listening capabilities by establishing this connection, you can efficiently monitor mentions of your brand on instagram, facebook, and other social media platforms video walkthrough video transcript this is a transcript from the loom video walkthrough \[00 00] hey, this is jeff at roster in this video, we are going to connect our facebook and instagram accounts to our brand account in roster \[00 08] and there's a lot of reasons why you would want to do this the main reasons are that when you connect to your account, it enables roster to do social listening \[00 18] so we can listen for people who mention your brand in instagram and, on facebook and twitter, or x, excuse me, and it allows you to create social campaigns and actions that have your ambassadors mention your brand and use special hashtags, which is how you can drive amazing word of mouth marketing to \[00 40] your website and get brand awareness and brand exposure that your ambassadors are totally willing to do, uhm, and they just are willing to want some direction from you and a little bit of incentive \[00 50] so, let's go ahead and click on the brand logo down at the bottom of the window here this is going to open up a, oops, i've got to move that, this is going to open up up, click on integrations, and this will bring us to the integrations page, and the first tab in integrations is social profiles, which \[01 10] is where we want to be so, here you can see that i don't have a facebook and instagram account connected, so before i click connect, i just want to give you a quick overview of how facebook and instagram connections work, um, both companies, as you probably know, are owned by meta, and in order to connect \[01 28] either of these accounts, you have to connect them through your facebook account, and so, when i click connect, what it's going to do is it's going to open up a page for me to authenticate through facebook, so i'll click connect right here, and it's going to take me to facebook, and it's going to show \[01 46] me which account that i'm currently signed in as, um, it's, i'm actually, right now, signed into a facebook page, and it's telling me that it's going to switch me to my facebook personal account \[01 58] you have to log in to facebook with an a personal account, and then that personal account needs to be connected to whichever facebook page or set of pages you want to connect on behalf of your brand \[02 12] so, because i've previously connected, you're not going to see the initial dialog that comes up, but the initial dialog, um, i can, i can see that by clicking this edit access, and when this edit access window opens up, it shows you a bunch of permissions that are being requested, and for which page \[02 30] or account that they are being requested for, and facebook did a wonderful job of making this really hard to understand, probably more confusing than it needs to be \[02 43] there's a mix of, well, i'll just go through for this, as a, as a high level though, the big, the big caveat here is that roster needs you to select all of these \[02 55] if you don't select any of, any one of these, then our ability to perform the basic actions that you're paying roster for will be hampered or, uhm, completely blocked \[03 07] so we only ask for the permissions that are absolutely mandatory and we use facebook's api to ensure that we are going through, uhm, exactly the way that they intend third party apps like roster to do it \[03 21] and we have regular audits by them, uhm, where we have to give them complete access and they come in and verify that we've implemented everything correctly \[03 30] and they're very strict about that so, uhm, just kind of looking through this, we have managers, your business this is the, we're not going to come in and manage your business \[03 41] actually, this is facebook's term for having a business account, which i'll show you a little bit later in the meta business suite \[03 48] and we need that in order to be able to see the, uhm, the accounts that you have connected to that business \[03 54] uhm, we need to be able to access the profile posts from the instagram account that you've connected with connected to your page \[04 01] so this is actually referring to an instagram account right here and we don't do any commenting on your page or instagram accounts whatsoever, but we do need this permission in order to be able to pull in the comments and comment counts \[04 16] uhm, the insights is the ability to get insights off of instagram stories and posts and those insights let's include how many times they've been liked and commented on and viewed and what the reach is, the actual real reach for those \[04 32] uhm, create and manage content on your page again, we actually don't create any content whatsoever on your facebook pages or your instagram profiles \[04 44] this is just how they term it, but we do need to be able to pull in the content uhm, that your ambassadors mention you on \[04 52] uhm, reading the content posted on the pages uhm, yeah, this is, again, just being able to see what people are mention, which posts are mentioning your brand \[05 02] uhm, manage account settings and webhooks for a page we need the webhook that will tell us when somebody has mentioned you in a facebook post or an instagram post \[05 12] so that we know to go pull that in reading user content, again, that's back to people posting on your page when they have mentioned you \[05 20] it allows us to pull in the metrics of those, uhm, of those mentions and then showing a list of pages, uhm, i'll show you later on \[05 29] we, we have to be able to select, see that list of pages so we can have you select which pages you want to enable and roster \[05 35] so, i know that's a, a big a lot to, uhm, understand right there but we do get some questions on people feeling uncomfortable selecting all those, uhm, all those toggles and it's understandable \[05 47] there's a lot of toggles and they're hard to understand so, but the bottom line is they do all need to be checked \[05 53] so once you have gone through that part, you can click continue and this this will, bring you back to roster and if all goes well by the time this page finishes loading you will see the facebook paid page or pages and the instagram account or accounts that are connected to your personal facebook page \[06 17] on behalf of the brand and it will show no error messages it's possible there will be a little error message on one of these or there will be a little error message here or a little warning if you click on this it will bring up all of the profiles that are connected to your personal facebook page or \[06 34] the page that you authenticated with in the previous step sometimes you might have multiple sets of facebook page and instagram handles associated to your store or excuse me to your facebook page and maybe you don't want all of them to be included in roster \[06 52] it's very simple just uncheck this toggle right here and then that handle roster won't listen for any posts with that page we won't show this as an option when you're creating campaigns or actions that have social requirements so if you do have any like personal pages or pages from other brands you're \[07 12] working with you just simply deselect them and then you'll be able to just select the ones that you want there's another troubleshooting video there might be like i mentioned error messages here and there's it can be pretty straightforward to resolve those and it can also be a little bit frustrating \[07 30] because you're dealing with meta and they can be really difficult to deal with so i don't want to cover those cases in this video but so far go ahead and close that so at this point \[07 39] i am fully connected and if i was now to wait some time and somebody was to at mention my page on facebook or at mention my instagram handle then those posts would automatically get pulled in on the social feed page and then if i was to create a campaign or action that had a social component and people \[08 01] mentioned to them then they will get pulled in at least we make every attempt to pull them in so, that is the happy path scenario of connecting your instagram and facebook accounts in roster as a brand \[08 14] it's a very different experience for ambassadors and we'll cover that in a separate video but hopefully that gives you a good idea \[08 21] it's possible you're going to run into issues take a look at our troubleshooting guide and if you still need help, send us an email to support at getroster com and we will do our best to help you along the way with your amazing facebook and instagram connection journey \[08 37] alright, have a nice day thanks prerequisites before connecting
