Commission overrides guide
Commission overrides let you change how commission is calculated in specific situations, instead of applying your default referral reward to every order. Use them to pay a different rate on certain products or contacts, reward higher-performing ambassadors with better rates, or keep an order attributed to an ambassador without paying commission on it.
What is a commission override?
By default, every qualifying referral order earns your standard referral reward (a percentage, a fixed amount, or points). A commission override is a rule that changes that default in a specific case. The order is still tracked and attributed the same way; only the reward calculation changes.
You can combine overrides, and you can turn any of them on or off at any time. Each type is covered in its own guide, linked below.
Types of commission override
Product override
Pay a higher or lower rate, or no reward at all, on specific products or collections, while the rest of your catalog keeps your default rate. Good for pushing a launch or protecting margin on specific items.
Contact tag override Sub-article to write
Pay a different rate to ambassadors who carry a specific contact tag. Good for giving a group, for example VIP partners or a specific tier of creators, their own rate without changing everyone else.
Recurring order override
Set a different rate for recurring (repeat) orders than the one you pay on the first order. Good for rewarding the initial sale more heavily while still giving ambassadors credit on repeat purchases.
First-time referral only
Generate a commission only on a customer's first referred order. If the customer was ever referred before, by any ambassador (even one who is no longer active), their later orders are not attributed and earn no commission.
Order attribute override (Shopify only)
Keep an order attributed to the ambassador, but create no commission for it when the order carries a specific attribute you choose. Good for internal, employee, wholesale, or gifted orders. This override only appears when your store is connected to Shopify.
When would I use one?
- You want a higher rate on a new launch, or a lower rate on low-margin items (product override).
- You want one group of ambassadors to earn a different rate from everyone else (contact tag override).
- You want first orders and repeat orders rewarded differently (recurring order override).
- You only want to reward the first purchase a new customer makes (first-time referral only).
- You want the ambassador credited for a sale but not paid a commission on it, for example internal or wholesale orders (order attribute override, Shopify only).
