Discounts overview
Roster is an amazing platform with which to manage all the discount codes involved in your ambassador, creator, affiliate, and pro programs. There are a handful of core concepts in Roster regarding discounts that are helpful to know to ensure you are using the features correctly. This document will give you a brief overview of these concepts before you dive into the more specific and nuanced articles.
Discount codes
Discount codes are individual codes that can be used by customers to get a discount when making a purchase. These are also referred to in other platforms as coupon codes, redeem codes, and vouchers.
Discount codes are assigned to individual ambassadors for the purpose of either sharing with friends, family, and followers to drive referrals, or as personal discounts and rewards for the ambassadors' own usage.
Each discount code in Roster exists within a discount rule, which provides an intuitive, user friendly way to manage large volumes of codes within your Roster account.
Discount rules
Discount rules in Roster are an incredibly easy way to manage all the discount codes associated with your ambassador programs. Discount rule serve three main functions:
- Discount rules define the discount that a customer will receive (e.g. 20% off)
- Discount rules act as a container for all of the codes that get created or imported into the rule
- Discount rules determine whether or not Roster attributes orders to ambassadors as either referred or personal orders.
Shareable vs. leakproof vs. reward discount rules
There are three types of discount rules in Roster, each with specific features and usage intentions. In most cases, Roster automatically creates the specific kind of discount rule for you, such as when adding a shareable discount to a program, or when adding a discount code reward to a campaign.
Shareable discount rules are intended to be assigned to ambassadors for the purpose of sharing with friends, family, and followers. Orders made with shareable codes are eligible to be attributed as referrals.

Leakproof discount rules are a feature of Roster's smart links. When enabled, Roster automatically creates single-use codes when customers buy from ambassadors' smart links. Orders made with leakproof codes are eligible to be attributed as referrals.

Reward discount rules are intended to provide perks and rewards to ambassadors and are intended for personal use. Orders made with reward codes are always attributed as personal orders and are not eligible to be attributed as referrals, even if ambassadors share their reward codes with friends or family.

Shopify vs. manual discount rules
Shopify-linked discount rules are linked to a top-level discount code in Shopify. Roster fully manages the creation, deactivation, and deletion of codes within a Shopify-linked discount rule. When viewing the list of discount rules in Roster, Shopify-linked discount rules include a View in Shopify link to quickly open the top-level discount code in your Shopify admin.
Manual discount rules are those that are not linked in Shopify. If your Roster account isn't connected to a Shopify store, then any discount rule that is created in Roster your Roster account will be a manual discount rule. Shopify brands can still create manual discount rules in Roster for use cases that don't fall outside the scope of Shopify-linked discount rules.
